Patents, copyright, and trademarks are the principal means by which an enterprise protects its unique ideas and designs, and how these are represented to the outside world. Hallmarks of a sustainable enterprise often include proactive encouragement to staff for the generation of innovative ideas; recognized practices in place for IP protection; cognizance of appropriate geographic registration of IP; periodic review of IP resources to assure cost-effectiveness and mission-relevance; active leveraging of IP to maintain and expand market presence; and openness to partnering with external innovators to “bundle” IP to greater effect.
